APTER TWO
SUCCESSION TO KIKMONGWI AT ORAIBI
According to our Navoti, there are four clans who succeed to Kikmongwi. They are the Bear Clan, Parrot Clan, Village Crier and Warrior Clan at the last. These four clans were designated to be Kikmongwi of Oraibi. If we Parrot Clan people have no one to succeed, then there is the clan who assist us. This is the Rabbit/Tobacco Clan. In essence, they are part of the parrot Clan in this succession because these two clans help us in our ceremony, the So-Ya-Lang Ceremony.
When we are in this ceremony, we do not prepare tobacco to smoke ourselves. It is the tobacco Clan person who does this for those of us who are in ceremony. This is that clan’s main role.
When we are in the kiva, we do not talk to each other, but sit beside each other, saying nothing. One cannot just simply stand up when one gets tired. Instead, you make a motion for tobacco to smoke. The Tobacco Clan person sees you and prepares the tobacco, lights it and gives it to you. You then smoke the tobacco and when you are finished, you give the pipe back to this person who will place it where it belongs. This is how the Tobacco Clan person works with us in the ceremonial kiva.
The role of the Rabbit Clan is a little different. When we begin the second part of the So-Ya-Lang Ceremony, we hunt for rabbits during the first three days. Then on the fourth day we have a rabbit feast. Thus, it is with the Rabbit Clan that we begin the second part of our ceremony. This is the reason why the Rabbit Clan is included in our succession to the position of Kikmongwi.
When this succession was established, all the ceremonies were intact and active. Therefore, if this was still like that anc complete, when the Parrot Clan line dies out, then it may go to the Rabbit/Tobacco Clan. However, if the ceremonies are not intact and active when the Parrot Clan line dies out, then it may go to the Crier Clan (Tab Wuna). The last clan to succeed to the Kikmongwi will be the Coyote Clan.
It is already true that the ceremonies are no longer intact and complete. We are now living in a white man’s way, so we shall have to see how this will proceed. “This is the Navoti, so it will not be forgotten.” King said, “it is well know that four clans are designated, so this will not be forgotten. This will not wash or fade off. These four are designated, so they will be the only ones.”
When the Parrot Clan is about to die out, then it will be I, who will pass it on. If the ceremonies are still intact and active and the Tobacco Clan still provides me with tobacco in ceremony, then I will mention this. I will say “this is already established in this way, so the Rabbit/Tobacco Clan will succeed me to be Kikmongwi.
